In a candid chat with Harshita Srivastava, the energetic, dynamic and young at heart author talks about her passion and the obstacles conquered while getting the book into picture.
Hello Ma’am. Greetings from Isahitya.
Ques: From a writer to an author, how does the change make you feel?
Preeti Singh: Simply ecstatic!! Writing was always a passion for me since I was 9 yrs old. I took it up professionally about 5 years back with my website www.writingnaturally.com …..The shift from a writer to an author was a smooth drift. Yes turbulent weathers were plenty but then the sweetness of this shift was worth every ounce of effort.
Ques: Tell us something about yourself.
Preeti Singh: I belong to an army background. My father is a retired army general and I have studied in army schools all over India including being an alumni of La Martinere College for Girls Lucknow. I graduated from MCM DAV college Chandigarh along with earning the title of Miss MCM way back in the 90’s. I married an army officer and have a 15 yr old daughter. I am an epileptic since birth and you can find my epileptic awareness page on FB here
Ques: Being a debut author come up with a crime thriller, what hardships you had to face while getting your book published?
Preeti Singh: Well most publishers did not want to risk publishing a crime thriller and that too based in the 80s without any mobiles and laptops. So I faced many rejections as the trend nowadays is for chick lit love stories. Some publishers wanted a large sum of money to publish the novel but I did not want to go ahead with self publishing. I am grateful to Mahaveer for taking my hard work and turning my dream into a reality.
Ques: Tell us something about your book.
Preeti Singh: My book follows the theme of KARMA RETURNING. It’s based in the 80s and in the suburbs of Shimla. It follows subtle murders and crimes which anyone can do. The idea was to convey a message to the masses that no matter what you do, you have to pay for it here—on this earth and go. It’s about a young boy who is deprived of love and acceptance and how he takes up crime as a way to get what he wants. But the question is does he succeed?? Or does fate win ?
Ques: ‘Flirting with Fate’, quite an interesting title. How did you come up with it?
Preeti Singh: I wanted the title to click everyone—of all age groups—so FLIRTING was intended for the younger generation and FATE I felt would click with the elders who believe in destiny.
Ques: Is there any message you would like to give through your novel?
Preeti Singh: Yes—try not to tell even a single lie or do a single crime because I strongly feel no one will catch you but someone up there is watching and our report cards are being made. We have to pay for it here and now before we leave. It’s a tried and tested theory which always happens in our lives.
Ques: The protagonist in your novel is a male, how tough was it to bring about the male thought of view?
Preeti Singh: Phew !! This was the biggest challenge—to write like a man. Being a woman I didn’t know what a man feels, undergoes, his desires, fears, angst etc. So I sought help from many male friends, brothers, my husband and wrote what I gathered best.
Ques: What kind of response did you receive at the book launch that recently took place at Chandigarh?
Preeti Singh: Mine was the first book launch I ever attended. I was very nervous but all went off very well. Family friends and the media made it happen successfully. From my profile u can take the media coverage—snaps and videos of the launch.
Ques: If you had to do it all over again, what would you like to change in your book?
Preeti Singh: Not a thing. It’s my baby. I love it the way it’s been conceived, created and delivered!!
Ques: Are you working on a second book?
Preeti Singh: The concept is in my mind but I yet have to give it shape. But I am taking my own time, still on a euphoric vacation!!
Ques: Who has been your source of inspiration? And who is that one author you look up to?
Preeti Singh: My inspiration has been my late mother who also believed in Karma. She also loved writing but cancer took her away before she could pen her thoughts—this book is dedicated to her. I read Eckhart Tolle aplenty and have read his POWER OF NOW repeatedly . I love spiritual and self help books and try to inculcate those teachings in my real life..
Ques: And finally, any advice or suggestion you would like to give to aspiring authors and readers?
Preeti Singh: Life is too short—just spill your thoughts on paper---if you have a talent –let the world know it—coz kal ho na ho
Thank you Ma’am. It was a pleasure talking to you.
